Legacy giving can be broken down into two basic categories based on when the donations will occur. The first category consists of in-kind gifts which are non-cash gifts donated in the here and now (i.e. specifically concerning legacy giving: stocks, bonds, mutual funds. In-kind gifts can also be goods and/or services donated to an organization). The second category consists of planned giving which is most often a contribution arranged in the present to be transferred at a future date, typically once the donor has passed away (these are commonly donated through a will or trust).
